Turkish Competition Board Started a Sector Inquiry on the Online Advertising Sector
The Turkish Competition Authority (“Authority“) announced within its official website that the Competition Board (“Board“) initiated a Sector Inquiry on the Online Advertising Sector in order to closely monitor both national and international current developments regarding online advertising in an attempt to identify the behavioural or structural competition related issues in the sector and develop solutions to the relevant issues.
It is indicated in the announcement that “the online advertising industry has a complex supply chain that contains many services and active players, it shows a double-sided market structure and it consists of a wide variety of ad types and downstream markets.”
With this inquiry, the Board, not only demonstrated that it continues closely monitoring the online markets, but also underlined that it keeps examining the developments within the competition authorities around the world. Indeed, the announcement states that “the complex structure and rapid development of the online advertising market has attracted the attention of competition authorities all over the world and the sector has been the subject of many examinations and inquiries.“
The Board also emphasized the fact that the broadcasting sector has transferred to digital media from the traditional channels with the increase in e-commerce activities and therefore, online advertising has gained a great momentum. Especially, with the significant internet and social media utilization habits, Turkey has become an important market for online advertising.
In this regard, the Board demonstrated its will to establish effective competition and overcome the anti-competitive concerns that arise due to the market power of a small number of undertakings that hold large size of data and product portfolio.
Accordingly, the Board has indicated that, it plans to organize multiple workshops with the players active in the market, if meetings with the decision-makers in the sector, undertakings and undertaking associations would be deemed as necessary during the sector inquiry process.
The players active in the sector are also invited to provide their opinions concerning the sector directly to the Board until June 21, 2021, via the e-mail address provided within its official website.
